Einar Hope is Professor of energy economics at the Norwegian School of Economics (NSE) in Bergen, Norway, since 2000. His academic career goes back to 1967 when he became Associate Professor at the School, specializing in industrial organization and economic policy.

He has headed three research institutions closely associated with the NSE, i.e. The Institute of Industrial Research (1975-78), The Centre for Applied Economic Research (1978-90) and the Foundation for Research in Economics and Business Administration (1990-1995). The research institutions performed applied research in economics and business administration on contracts with research councils and government and industrial institutions and firms. The Foundation for Research in Economics and Business Administration became the leading research institution in Norway under his leadership.

He was the principal investigator of the research project at the NSE in 1987-90, designing the market and regulatory structure of the Norwegian electricity market reform, which was one of the first market-based reforms of the power sector in the world. He was an advisor to the Norwegian government during the implementing stages of the reform and also in connection with the further integration of the electricity markets in Denmark, Finland and Sweden into the Nordic integrated power market. He has also been an advisor the Icelandic government on energy market deregulation.

In 1995 he was appointed Director General of the Norwegian Competition Authority by the Norwegian government, a position he held till 2000. There he was heavily involved in competition policy and sector-specific regulatory reforms within the EU and OECD areas, writing policy notes and organizing a number of conferences and seminars on these issues.

He has been a Council member of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) for many years and was the President of the IAEE in 2012. He initiated the establishment of the new journal of the IAEE, Economics of Energy and EnvironmentalPolicy, which came out with its first issue in January 2012, and is also the Book Review Editor of the journal.

He is the author of several books and more than 200 scientific articles and papers. He has lectured and taught at many universities and institutions around the world, including the School of International Economics at Tbilisi State University.

In 2007 he was knighted as Knight of the First Order of the Royal St. Olav Order by the King of Norway for “his services to society and mankind”.
